Interpretive Gameplay Methodology2024-25
Games user research is a young field that commonly relies on methods borrowed from other disciplines (Lankoski & Bjork, 2015). To supplement them, methods tailored for video game environments may better support the innovation of game design and therefore games. This project presents a new method called Interpretive Gameplay that is being formulated for the making of an environment-centered sandbox video game. Sandbox games can be defined in this way: a game containing many features with unstructured creativity (O’Hara, 2020), as opposed to the maintenance of strictly designed goals (Huuhka, 2016). Interpretive gameplay might assist in the early stages of sandbox development when the quantity of features is not yet conducive to sandbox-like play. The goal of the method is to provide researchers and designers with valuable insights into situational player behavior that can inform the development of projects with speculative social themes.
